✨ A pantry reset (+ a free checklist)

Hi Reader,

First, a big thank you to everyone who filled out my reader survey. I genuinely loved reading your responses, and they're going to help shape what I make for you this year.

And congratulations to Jen H., who won the $25 gift card draw! 🎉

This week I've been thinking about what I need to clean in my kitchen this spring, and cleaning through my pantry is at the top of my list. If yours is in a similar state, I have a few tips to help you get it sorted out (plus a resource to help you figure out what should actually be in there).

A few tips for cleaning out your pantry

  1. 🧽 Take everything out and wipe down your shelves. It's easiest to start with a clean slate.
  2. 📆 Check expiry dates. While most pantry-safe items are probably safe to eat for a while after the expiry date, I'd throw out anything that expired more than 6 months ago.
  3. 🫙 Use the Marie Kondo method. Group supplies together by their use. Baking supplies together, canned goods together, grains together. You’ll immediately see what you have too much of (bakers chocolate, if you're me) and what you’re actually out of.
  4. 📋 Make a “use it up” list. Before you add anything to your grocery list, write down the things you already have that need to be used soon. Then plan one or two meals around them.

Once your pantry is cleared out, the next question is: what should actually go back in? I wrote a full guide covering pantry, fridge, and freezer essentials; including tips for storing everything properly.

I've also put together an updated free pantry checklist you can use while you shop or restock, complete with recipe inspiration to help you use up what you have.

Hi Reader, Berry season is here, and I have two new salad recipes to share this week. Both feature fresh summer berries and come together quickly as a side dish or a light lunch. 🍓🫐 If the idea of fruit in a savoury salad sounds a little odd, don't worry. The berries actually add a nice pop of sweetness that balances out the other flavours really well. Hi Reader, I hope you’ve had a wonderful week! We celebrated Canada Day here on Wednesday, and I know many of my readers in the US are heading into a big holiday weekend right now. Whether you are firing up the grill or just settling into a relaxing Friday night, I have the perfect drink to kick back with. To my friends in the US, think of this as an upgraded, deeply savoury cousin to the classic Bloody Mary, made with clam juice! If you have never tried a Canadian Caesar cocktail before, I...

Hi Reader, We are halfway through asparagus season here in Ontario, Canada, which means you still have a few weeks to make the most of it before it disappears from the farmers' markets until next spring. This week I'm sharing two recipes that put it front and centre.
